New anti-terrorism unit formed

The government has created a separate crime busting ‘Anti Terrorism Unit’ (ATU) following an approval of the government.

The move has been taken to strengthen the government initiative to curb terrorism in the country.

Bangladesh Post on Wednesday obtained a copy of the official order issued by the Home Ministry in this regard.

According to the home ministry sources, an additional inspector general of Police (Adl IGP) will head the unit. There will also be a Deputy Inspector General and two additional deputy inspector generals (Adl DIGs) in the ATU.

Five Superintend of Police(SP) , ten Additional   Superintend of Police(Adl SP) and twelve Assistant Superintend of Police(ASP) will be appointed for the ATU unit, the home ministry sources said.

Seventy-five inspectors, 125 sub-Inspectors, 140 assistant sub-inspectors, 200 constables, one system analyst, one assistant maintenance engineer, one assistant programmer and two office assistants cum computer operators will be also assigned.

Sixteen Jeeps, two SWAT vans, eight double cabin vans, one ambulance, one truck, one APC, one prison van, one water trailer and ten motorcycles will also be provided.

Sources at the home ministry said although the official order said that an Adl IGP will be chief of the ATU, DIG Monirul Islam, who is now heading the DMP’s CTTC, will be appointed as the acting chief of the anti-terror wing of police.

A senior officer of the home ministry said DIG Monir is regarded as an unparallel counter terrorism expert and he has international reputation in ant-militancy experience, the high-ups of the government has already instructed the home ministry to make Monir as the boss of the ATU.

As Monir, who is now an additional commissioner of DMP with the rank and status of a DIG , will be the acting chief of the ATU until he gets promoted to the post of Adl IGP, said the  official sources.

There are several other specialised units of police. They include Special Branch (SB),

Criminal Investigation Department (CID),Railway Police (GRP),Highway Police, Industrial Police, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI),Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBN),Armed Police Battalion (APBN),Rapid Action Battalion (RAB),River Police.

All these units are headed by Adl IGP.
